Memories of Naomi Lovett - Class of 1945

MCHS: FOND MEMORIES

I, Naomi Lovett, attended the first two years of high school at Pine Knot.  Suddenly (it seemed) the county decided to “vote” the junior and senior years should be at McCreary County High.

We boarded the bus and went to Whitley City for our last two years of high school.  As we said “Goodbye” to Pine Knot, we shouted “Hello” to the McCreary County High School.  We found McCreary High a grand place to be, and the last two years we were there, we were just as happy as we were at Pine Knot, if not more so.

There were seventeen (17) of us from Pine Knot to join the Junior class, which made a total of forty-six (46).  But the Senior Graduating Class had only twenty-seven (27) graduates in all. This was the school year of 1944-45.

A.M. Webb was Superintendent and Paris Ballou was Principal.  Bertha Ball was my Senior Class Sponsor.  Carl Allen and Eliza Miller were my music teachers and Bertha Ball was my Business Arithmetic teacher.  Dewey Ball was in Gym and Zora Ball kept my Study Hall. Flora Bass was my English and Shorthand teacher.

Our Senior Play Sponsor was Conley Bell.  I remember the Senior play was “The Improper Henry Proper”.  Robert Hatfield and I played the leading parts.  There were nine (9) other cast members in the play.

All of these teachers played a very important part in forming my life.  I especially remember and thank the leadership of my music teacher, Carl Allen.  He was great inspiration to me.  He formed what he called an orchestra and encouraged us to do our best.  I played the bass violin.  There were seven (7) other instruments in the orchestra.  We played at half-time for the basketball games and on other occasions.

All of these teachers inspired us to do our best and I have always appreciated their leadership and dedication!
